PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — This week on Flashpoint: Host and KYW Newsradio Community Affairs reporter Cherri Gregg asks the burning questions about the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history. As the country closes out a month with 800,000 workers on furlough, government employees are feeling the pain.

Some of the country's essential services have grinded to a halt as President Donald Trump and Senate Republicans hold fast to their demand for a wall along the US Southern Border. Meanwhile, Democrats are not relenting, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer refusing to grant the President's request for a wall.

So what about the workers in the middle? What will be the backlash? Will there be a long term impact? We walk through the flames of this discussion with Cary Conglianese, a law and political science professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Larry Ceisler, a political strategist and Gary Morton, President of AFGE Council 239, representing 8,000 employees of the Environmental Protection Agency.

The Flashpoint newsmaker of the week is Congressman Dwight Evans, 3rd District, who is making his second appearance on Flashpoint. He was reelected to serve in the U.S. House and is part of the Democratic majority. Evans discusses his new committee appointments, as well as the Democrats' strategy to turn up the heat on Republicans so that the shutdown can get shut down.
